Sofia’s public transport is operated by the Centre for Urban Mobility. As of 1 January 2026, Bulgaria joined the eurozone and transport fares were recalculated.

Metro

2 lines (M1/M4, M2, M3 under construction), 47 stations:

  • Fare: €0.80 single (paper ticket) or €0.80 (30+ transfer ticket via contactless)
  • Hours: 5:30–23:30
  • Contactless credit/debit cards accepted at all barriers — tap the blue reader

Key stations:

  • Serdika — central interchange (Roman ruins in the station)
  • Sofia Airport — M4 terminal station (~20 min to centre)
  • Central Railway Station — M2 connection
  • NDK/National Palace of Culture — M2

Trams, Trolleybuses, and Buses

The ground network is extensive:

  • Single paper ticket (from driver): €1.00
  • 30-minute electronic ticket: €0.80 (transfers allowed)
  • 60-minute electronic ticket: €1.10
  • Day pass: €2.00 (auto-capped when using contactless card)
  • 24-hour pass: €3.00
  • 72-hour pass: €7.60
  • Monthly pass: €25.50 (all lines) / €12.70 (young people)

Sofia City Card

Rechargeable electronic card (€1.50) or Ultralight (€0.40) for loading passes. Available at metro cashiers.

Contactless Payment (Best for Tourists)

Tap your bank card or phone on the blue validator when boarding. The system automatically caps charges:

  • 1–2 trips: charged as singles (€0.80 each)
  • 3+ trips: automatically converted to a day pass (€2.00 max)

Taxis

Taxis in Sofia are very affordable by European standards:

  • Start: ~€1.50
  • Per km: ~€0.80
  • Yellow cabs are official taxis — look for the yellow licence plates
  • Taxi apps: TaxiMe, Yellow Taxi, Fly Taxi (order via phone or app)
  • Uber is not available; the closest is TaxiMe (app-based)
  • Airport to city centre: ~€12–18

Tips

  • Download the MPASS app for mobile tickets (used on all transport except metro)
  • Google Maps works well for route planning in Sofia
  • Trams and trolleybuses are charming but can be crowded — the metro is faster
  • Vitosha Mountain buses run from the city centre (line 63, 66)
  • Inspectors do random checks — always validate your ticket (fine: ~€30)
